I was born and raised as a Christian, and come from a devout Christian family. But as I grew up, I was less interested in praying, not due to lack of belief, but it just was not a priority for me any more. Even though I carried the bible with me wherever I went, I didn’t read any of the verses. Then, during the lock down, when I was away from my family for several months at a stretch and started having mild episodes of anxiety, my mom suggested I start praying daily. I started doing that and also decided to read the bible verses. I had lots of time to kill and loved reading anyway, so I thought why not.
Once I started reading the bible, I was soon hooked on to it and even started making notes. Every time I came across something that made me feel more calm and peaceful, I made a note of it in my diary and then read those verses just before bedtime or when I felt anxious or lonely.
One of the most powerful Bible verses to calm your anxiety is the Psalm of David [Psalm 23]:
The Lord is my shepherd. There is nothing I shall want. Fresh and green are the pastures, where he gives me repose. Near restful waters he leads me, to revive my drooping spirit. Even though I walk through the darkest alley, no evil would I fear.
— Psalm of David (Psalm 23)
During my low phases, it was this Psalm that comes to my rescue. This verse always brought me comfort and a sense of safety — especially when everything around seemed doom and gloom and I was afraid about a health condition and something happening to me.

Here are 7 other calming bible verses that have comforted me at different times.
1. When you wish to feel the comfort of God’s presence
“Be still, and know that I am God.”
— Psalm 46:10
This verse reminds us to find stillness and trust in God’s presence and power. Ironically, I chant this whenever I go out for a walk. It’s my mind that needs to be stilled, and as I chant this, I look around mindfully and appreciate God’s beautiful creation all around me.
2. When you want to calm your anxiety
“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.”
— 1 Peter 5:7
This is another one of my favorite chants. If I am feeling anxious, especially at work, I just take a break and chant this one mentally. This verse encourages us to surrender our worries and concerns to God, knowing that He cares for us deeply.
3. When you need God’s guidance
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.”
— Psalm 23:1

4. When you want to let go of your fears
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

5. When you are facing a difficult situation
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

I find this verse empowering when I am feeling anxious about wanting a specific outcome from a situation. It encourages us to turn to prayer, gratitude, and trust in God’s provision, reminding us of the peace that comes from such surrender.
6. When you are concerned about the future
“Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
— Matthew 6:34
This verse reminds us to focus on the present moment and trust that God will provide for our needs. It encourages us to let go of worrying about the future.
