Go trekking

What is this life if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare.

William Henry

“When was the last time you took a vacation, or pleasure trip?” Most of us would respond gingerly – not in the affirmative.

Blame it on increased work pressures and growing competition in almost every field, it has become difficult for many of us to take that much-needed break from the pressures of work and the grind of daily routine. However, each one of us must realise that taking a regular vacation can cure us of work-related stress. It can also do wonders for your overall wellbeing.

It is a proven fact that by taking regular vacations, you can eliminate stress from your life, and reduce the risks of life-threatening diseases and also enhance your productivity at work.

There are a plethora of options that you can choose from while planning a vacation. However, for those who love exploring the outdoors, and are fascinated by the mighty mountains, a trekking expedition can be just what you need to remain physically fit and mentally alert.

The thrill lies in trail

Mountain trekking is an adventurous outdoor activity that offers unique opportunities for exploring the mighty mountain ranges with their undiscovered new paths and awe-inspiring beauty.

Trekking often refers to well-planned or totally impromptu hiking trips that involve walking through spectacular mountain ranges, rugged pathways and enchanted wilderness. The purpose? To explore and enjoy unspoiled scenic beauty.

What’s more, a mountain trekking expedition offers you a chance to meet and interact with many different kinds of people as you make your way up the mountains. You will be surprised by their wonderful hospitality, simple life and unique culture and tradition.

Recharge your batteries

Mountain trekking can be fun, exciting and every bit challenging. As you climb up the mountain ranges, you will experience peace, tranquillity and feel one with nature. It is an invigorating experience that is second to none. The serenity of the mountains will make you forget all your worries leaving you to marvel at one of God’s greatest creations.

Seasoned trekkers don’t need any guidance or help when they step out on their trekking expeditions. These adventure lovers thrive on the thrill and excitement of exploring newer paths through meandering mountain valleys and undiscovered trails. A lot of experienced trekkers set out on their own and undertake arduous journeys that are spread over many months – their only companions being their sturdy shoes, large backpack and an unending thirst to go where no one has gone before.

First-timers are generally advised to go on planned and organised hiking trips with a group of people, all taking the same path and proceeding towards the same destination. However, there are some overtly adventurous first-time hikers who venture on their own to experience the wonders of nature closely. The caveat is: tread with caution. There are many agencies and tour operators that organise treks for people and make all necessary arrangements including food, camping equipment, ponies, and porters.

Progressing towards higher altitudes can be physically taxing and difficult for some. Hence, it is best to know your limits and stride slowly. It is wise to take regular breaks and not overdo things.

Prepare well

Depending on the length of the trek, the days involved and the number of people going on a given trek, make a check-list of some of the essential items that you must carry with you. These include water, a well-stocked first-aid kit, woollens, iodine tablets, sunscreen lotion, sunglasses, torch with batteries, hat, insect repellant etc.,

Mountains beckon

Most people will agree that the mountains are one of the most awe-inspiring of God’s creations. Their tall, bold and magnificent snow-capped peaks and ranges seem to welcome you with open arms.

From time immemorial, mountains have had a great religious significance, especially in Hindu mythology. It is believed that Lord Krishna raised the Govardhana on his little finger to save the people of Braj from nature’s fury. Even today, people visit the Giriraji temple which is located some distance from Vrindavan and perform the 23-km parikrama of Govardhana.

Many Indian sages – a practice that has emerged since the beginning of time – meditate deep within the caves of the mighty Himalayas, where peace, serenity and Godliness prevail.

Mountain heroes

The call of the mountains is very strong for some people and has changed their lives forever.

Freeze-frame. Think of the famous Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, a Nepalese mountaineer who reached the summit of Mount Everest, along with Sir Edmund Hillary, from New Zealand, for the first-time in human history, on May 29, 1953.

It would be an affront not to mention the Sherpas who are experts in mountaineering. Sherpas, who usually hail from Tibet and Nepal, are mountain heroes well accustomed to the way of life at high altitudes. They make exceptional guides.

Great destinations

The opportunities for mountain trekking are limitless. Some of the most popular destinations include the Indian Himalayas, the mountains in Morocco, Nepal, Tibet, East Africa etc.,

India is a land of many breathtaking trekking trails and mountains. The country offers some of the best trekking opportunities. You can go hiking through the hills and mountains of Ladakh, Garhwal, Himachal Pradesh, Panchmarhi, Mussorie, Rishikesh, Shillong, Kalimpong, Darjeeling, Gangtok etc.,

Himalayan call

Trekking in the Himalayas is, by far, one of the most enriching experiences for any trekker. The Himalayan ranges are spread across Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh. There are also many temples, monasteries and culturally-rich locations spread across the Himalayas that enchant and lead us to a complete, holistic growth.
