Pages: 400

Price: Rs 390

ISBN-13: 978-9384238216

The synopsis describes this book as “A dialogue every man’s soul wants to have with him.” That itself should tell you that this book is not for everyone because not all of us are ready to take a good hard look at our lives. But if you are one of those who is seeking answers to life’s profound questions, then it’s definitely worth a read.

Why am I suffering so much? How can I be at peace? What is Karma? How does it impact my present circumstances? What happens when we die? These are some common questions that surface when we deliberate about our existence and our purpose on this planet. In this book, author Suzy Singh, who calls herself a Karma Coach, attempts to answer these questions by reconnecting us to the principles of ancient wisdom—stuff that we all innately know but have forgotten or disconnected with, due to our conditioning and modern lives. The seven karma codes form the backbone of the book and Suzy explains how these codes have the power to change our lives. Through her own experiences and those of her clients, she states that the ticket to our freedom is universal: look within yourself. That sounds simple but we all know that to find answers within ourselves requires a compass to help with direction. That’s where this book comes handy.

Suzy lucidly explains how each one of us is connected to each other, beyond time and space and how everything that we do or say has a butterfly effect within the context of the collective human consciousness. She states that before we can hope to be at peace or do any good in this world, we first need to attend to our own wounds, received in this lifetime and even those inherited from our ancestors. Needless to say, the book also talks about our spirit guides and masters who are forever willing to help. And no, you don’t need any special qualifications to access them. They are always around; all you need to do is call them and ask for help.

The book also touches upon how a soul chooses the family it wants to be born in, in order to accelerate its own growth. The author contends that even when the soul chooses a home that is filled with violence and poverty, there is a higher reason for doing so because that environment offers the most fertile ground for the soul’s learning.

According to the author, each one of us has a purpose in life and that our soul lessons are imprinted in our DNA, yet there are many pathways before us. She explains exactly what these are and how you can activate a higher destiny.

7 Karma Codes nudges us not to waste time on the drama that we often surround ourselves with. It tells us that a better life is within our reach, based on the choices we make each day. What I liked most about the book is that it does not make spirituality appear as something lofty and only for ascetics. Rather, the reader is introduced to the middle path, where one can enjoy a life abundant with material pleasures and also where you accelerate spiritually.

Every thinking person has pondered over his existence at one time or another. Every intelligent individual has raised questions such as, “Who am I?” “Where have I come from?” “What is the mystery of life and this universe?” Many people look to science for answers. Yet, in spite of its giant strides, scientific inquiry has its limits—it is outwardly directed hence can never answer questions about the subject, about the inquirer with the same approach it uses to understand the objective world.

The basis of scientific truth is that, once proved, a postulate should stand the test of experiments consistently. In this respect, the experience of those who have discovered the mystery of life is consistent and can be considered scientific. Shivoham Shivoham by whosoever is only the latest “proof” of this.

This is not a typical book—its presentation, layout, language is as unique as its message. A transcription of discourses the author gave over a 10-day meditation retreat, Shivoham Shivoham gives its readers a taste of the live retreat by retaining the original flavour as much as possible.

The book derives its name from an ancient poem by the great advaita sage Adi Sankaracharya. The first chapter starts off with an exposition of this poem and sets the tone and expectation of what is to follow—a radical insight into the nature of reality. This exposition is in itself capable of triggering a deep shift in the reader and makes the book worth having.

In subsequent chapters, whosoever gently but firmly carries the readers into the inner world of self-realisation, a world that is so close and yet so totally unfamiliar to us. As you read, you get a glimpse of this most precious world and wonder how you never noticed it. To those of you who have never been introduced to Advaita Vedanta concepts, the words in the book will come as a grand revelation. If you are well-versed with the Vedic teachings, you may find the ideas familiar. But even then, the book will be a beautiful reminder of what we miss by being immersed in an illusory world.

What makes Shivoham Shivoham endearing is the way whosoever uses everyday metaphors and examples to explain otherwise abstract ideas. Consider this: “Light does not become dirty when it falls on a dirty wall, the wall cannot even touch the light. In the same way, nothing can touch the person who is stabilised in his being; he remains untouched by attractions and repulsions, rights and wrongs, greed and attachment, by all kinds of inter-related opposites and dualities.”

Apart from Sankaracharya’s poem and a few references to his master Osho’s teachings, whosoever does not use too many quotations from scriptures or other masters; he prefers to talk directly and tries to provoke the reader into self-reflection via meditation. He emphasises the role of meditation for self-realisation enough times to make you want to try it.

The entire book is an effort in reinforcing the core message of why the illusion of the world arises and how you might transcend it. The essence is the same as that of masters like Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj, Sri Ramana Maharshi and Osho. There’s a fair amount of repetition, as is expected in a transcription of a live talk, but this repetition serves an important purpose—that of demolishing your old habitual way of identification and introducing you to your real Self. The language, too, is not refined but that doesn’t hamper the flow in any way. However, if you are a literary purist, be prepared to overlook occasional grammatical gaffes and knotty sentence structures for the sake of the deeper meaning that those words convey.

Overall, the book has a fresh fragrance to it, and will delight genuine seekers, whether beginners or advanced. It can be read by anyone, regardless of your religious or cultural background. All you need is an open mind.

One piece of advice: don’t try to get over with the book from cover to cover. Approach it with patience and enjoy the path of self-discovery that it points to. This might well be a turning point in your journey to self-realisation.

Despite the title, this book is not about the spiritual master Osho. It is about the eternal fragrance of universal consciousness, which enlightened masters such as Osho personify, and which the author now seems to embody.

Born Harish Chander and rechristened Swami Chaitanya Bharti by Osho himself, the author spontaneously started signing off as ‘whosoever’, feeling that the need for a name or an identity didn’t exist anymore. And in line with his own experience, the author eggs us to find this space where we can lose our identification with our transient or ‘false’ self and embrace the wordless.

The book is actually a rare collection of letters written by seekers from around the world and the author’s responses to them. The ideas contained in the responses are profound, even earth-shattering. And yet they are equally gentle and loving. Often you will find yourself in a reverie of sorts, reflecting on the deep wisdom that can come from someone who’s achieved a different level of awareness. Sometimes, the responses hit you like a tornado. At others times, they come like a soft, gentle breeze that caresses your being even as you feel like a white cloud, drifting away merrily.

What is striking is the way the author deals with the letters. He responds to every thought expressed by the letter writer, sometimes responding to every line, and in doing so, shows the seeker the mirror. This elaborate way of replying points to the vast amount of patience and compassion that Whosoever has towards the seekers. That he has an uncanny insight into the seeker’s real issues is evident from the way he cuts through the superficial meaning of the words and dives into the core. I suspect that in many cases, even the seeker doesn’t know what he or she was really trying to say, until Whosoever points it out.

I found beauty in the gentle yet firm compassion that oozes out of every sentence of Whosoever. Although some letters are interconnected, the book need not be read chronologically. In fact, I found that any random response would get me hooked on—because the way the answers are expressed makes one think.

If you are a follower of Osho’s teachings, you will find that many of the thoughts featured in the book resonate. Even then, Whosoever’s words bring a beautiful freshness to the indescribable wisdom of the Universe.

Rudolph Tanzi, professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School and one of the foremost experts on the causes of Alzheimer’s joins the prolific Deepak Chopra to bring you, by far, one of the most compelling books of the year.

The pioneering authors take you into a fascinating journey inside this awesome ‘three-pound universe’ called your brain, which they say is nature’s greatest gift to us. The basic premise of the book is that you are, at once, the leader, inventor, teacher and user of your brain. It is in these roles that you move from having an ordinary ‘baseline’ brain to possessing a super brain.

Backed by the latest research in neuroscience, they dispel the five most prevalent [and most limiting] myths associated with the brain.

Each chapter concludes with a section titled ‘Super Brain Solutions’ which tackles everyday issues of memory loss, depression, weight problems, anxiety and personal crises. Later, the section offers powerful ideas for self-healing, longevity, and lasting wellbeing.

The book offers hope and inspiration to everyone but especially those affected by Alzheimer’s, dementia and other mental illnesses. Contrary to old beliefs, these are not only preventable but also reversible, claim the authors.

After reading this book, you will likely come away feeling more in control of your mind and body and will discover your personal power, which was hitherto unknown to you.
