After a tiring day at work, each of us long to return to a clean, comfortable and peaceful home – one that can help us to relax and unwind.

No one ever said that keeping the home clean was easy. However, it is definitely something that cannot be ignored either! A clean home is the key to having a healthy home. A little bit of organised and sustained effort on the part of every member of the family can go a long way in keeping your home clean and healthy.

Home cleaning

Shop for good quality cleaning supplies for your home such as scrubs, wash cloth, dusters, brooms, room fresheners, dish detergents, and liquid soap, detergents for clothes, and keep them well stocked at all times. It is a good practice to store all these cleaning items together in one place so that you can find them easily. However, keep in mind that such items should be kept away from children.

Let’s take a look at some of the areas of your home that need special care and attention.

Bedroom and living room

Find a place for everything and keep everything in place.

Your bedroom should be spic and span with minimum clutter and confusion. This makes the cleaning job easier and minimises the chances of dust collection

Sweep and mop the floors with a good, natural disinfectant mixed in water

Use clean and washed pillow covers, bed sheets, blankets and bedcovers as this is where dust mites thrive

Clean and wipe all electrical fittings like ceiling fans, lights, lamps etc., Remove cobwebs and follow a thorough dusting regime as often as possible

Every once in a while, clear your wardrobe and cupboards. You will be surprised to find a lot of unwanted items that you would want to dispose off

Clean and dust your shoe-rack from time to time

Your living room should be vacuumed and tables wiped with a clean cloth.

Bathroom

The bathroom can become a haven for germs, if not cleaned properly. Maintaining bathroom hygiene and cleanliness is imperative to having a healthy home.

Disinfect and clean the floor, commode and the seat of the commode daily. Choose only the best home products for your home.

Keep the drains clean so that they don’t get clogged. Any clogging should be cleared quickly with the help of a plumber

Clean the bath tubs regularly to avoid infection

Use good quality brushes, brooms, mops etc., to clean the wash basin and bath tub

Never use the toilet brush to clean the wash basin, or vice versa, as this increases the chances of infection

Clean the bathroom window and keep the bathroom ventilated with the help of an exhaust fan. Bathroom fresheners are also a good idea

Fix those leaking taps and seepages

Throw away the trash daily.

Kitchen

Your kitchen is probably the most important part of the house that requires regular and thorough cleaning.

Wipe the stove soon after you finish cooking. Also, wipe the counter tops, sink and work area regularly

Sweep and mop the kitchen floor with a good disinfectant [phenyl] mixed in water. Such cleaning solutions are easily available in the market

Clear clogged drains immediately and clean them properly as this is the area that is most susceptible to bacteria and germs

Wash and change the kitchen cloth, wipes, and mops frequently

Store your kitchen essentials and food items in air-tight containers to keep them fresh and safe from insects

Make sure your kitchen is well-ventilated. Get the chimney and exhaust fan oiled and cleaned from time to time. Clear out all the grease

If you spill something, make it a habit to mop immediately so as to minimise the chances of insect breeding

Avoid clutter and keep your kitchen insect-free.

Carpets, rugs and upholstery

Guard all possible entry points that bring in dust, dirt, germs and bacteria.

Place good quality, washable mats at entrances

Train every member of your family to take off their shoes before entering the home as this helps in reducing germs, dirt, dust and pollutants from the house

Carpets and rugs in your home deserve extra attention while cleaning as they tend to collect maximum dust and germs. Your carpet should be brushed everyday, rolled and picked up while the floors are being swept

If you have pets, keep them clean by giving them a daily bath

Curtains can be dry cleaned or washed at fixed intervals

Your sofa and other furniture pieces may look clean but they may be hiding a lot of dust and dirt within the upholstery and carvings. Use a good vacuum cleaner with its special attachments to clean between the lines and under the sofas.

Your home is your special place and deserves all the love, care and attention that you can give it!

Don’t procrastinate

Each one of us tends to put off chores that we dislike for a later date. Don’t leave your house cleaning for tomorrow. If you see a cobweb on the ceiling, pick up your broom and remove it as soon as you notice it, or it will just get bigger. Weekdays might be busy for you, so plan your house cleaning schedule for the weekends.

Make it a family affair

The task of home cleaning should be shared by all members of the family, so that it doesn’t become a burden for any one person alone. Young kids can have fun while helping you with home cleaning. Assign simple tasks to them and keep them involved.

Parlour visits are a wholesome experience. At least that’s how they are meant to be. You go there to spend your lazy hours and pamper yourself. It’s the time when you leave all worries and tensions outside and immerse yourself in the sensations. It’s not the time to fret over a dirty napkin or an unwashed razor. You go there to feel good. That’s how you should feel even when you step out. You shouldn’t feel worried about what you take back home with you other than a relaxed experience.

Parlours are public spaces. A lot of body cleansing happens here, and there is a high chance for dangerous germs and infections to spread.

Be aware

Acquaint yourself with the essentials of a good beauty parlour. It will enable you to make an informed decision about the right parlour to visit. “Failure to use well-sterilised and clean instruments and towels during procedures such as manicure and pedicure can lead to warts, fungal and bacterial infections. Creams, wax jar and combs should be stored properly and never be shared between individuals,” says Dr Vandana Gupta, dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon from New Delhi.

Dr Madhuri Jesudanam, dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon from Hyderabad says, “Insist on the use of sterilised or disposable items in all parlour procedures. Lack of proper knowledge about hygiene among beauticians and lack of cleanliness can lead to a variety of bacterial, fungal and viral infections depending on the procedures done. While hair-related procedures can cause fungal infection of scalp, folliculitis, the spread of lice, manicure and pedicure can result in bacterial and fungal nail infection.” Visit salons where proper hygienic conditions prevail and resort to procedures after knowing their probable side-effects rather than blindly following the beauticians’ advice as some of them can cause permanent damage like scarring.

Select with care

Dr Monica Mittal, skin specialist from Chandigarh believes, “Whether you choose a parlour based on someone’s recommendation or it’s a well-known brand name, keep your eye on the techniques being used and whether or not the highest levels of cleanliness are being met. Faulty techniques used by semi-trained parlour staff can often lead to skin injuries and conditions such as tinea a [fungal skin infection].”

Checklist

Is the parlour well-lit with clean floors and well-maintained sitting areas?

Do they use sterilisers, disposable bed sheets and napkins?

Does the staff provide clean gowns, fresh towels and wipes to customers or do they reuse towels?

Do they use sterilised and clean manicure and pedicure sets, bowls and containers?

Do all product containers have labels on them and are they stored properly with closed lids?

Are the combs clean or do they have hair in them?

Did the beautician inquire about any allergies or perform an allergy test prior to giving you a facial or using a skin care product?

Is the beautician willing to answer questions about the quality and brands of products being used?

Do they have a cleaning staff that is paying attention to continuous and simultaneous cleaning up or is hair, tissue etc strewn all over the floors?

Is the staff using disposable waxing strips or are they still practicing the old and unhygienic technique of using cloth?

Is the parlour staff picking up things from the floor and using it without sterilising them?

Is the attendant using parts of the thread wet with her saliva while threading. This can lead to serious infections, so watch out!

What kind of astringent is used after threading? Does it smell funny or is it of good quality?

Is the staff well-trained and professional or do all of them seem like novices?

Are the attendants wearing clean uniforms, disposable gloves and are they well groomed with trimmedclean nails?

It doesn’t matter how often you go to a parlour—once a week, once a month, or once every few months. You still stand the chance of catching infection by visiting a parlour that is not hygienic, uses substandard products and faulty techniques.

Watch out

Here are some common dangers associated with visiting an unhygienic and ill-equipped parlour:

Substandard and poor quality products such as astringents, creams, face packs and peels, wax, shampoos and bleaches can lead to rashes, burning sensations, skin allergies and blocking of pores.

Shared use of combs, scissors, towels, wipes, nail cutters and other equipments can lead to infections.

Incorrect technique used during waxing to pull out the strip as well as during hair massages can lead to severe rashes and skin infections such as Folliculitis [a condition when hair follicles are damaged by friction from clothing].

Applying very hot wax on the skin can burn the skin and lead to skin eruptions.

Facial packs used without checking their strength can cause skin rashes, inflammation, pimples and peeling of sensitive skin.

Using very strong shampoos can cause hair fall.

Straightening, perming or hair colouring can lead to allergic reactions.

Poor quality hair dye with unspecified ingredients can aggravate allergies.

Minimise risks

So the next time you find yourself pressed for time and rushing to the nearest parlour you can spot, think about the dangers you may be subjecting yourself to. If you are still confused about selecting the most appropriate parlour for your regular needs, try out a parlour’s most basic service before engaging them for a major beauty treatment, haircut or skin treatment. This should help you to see just how professional they are in terms of maintaining hygiene and delivering quality services.

Choosing the right hygiene products for yourself and your home is a confusing task. Here are some factors to bear in mind while shopping for these products

The post Be Product-Wise appeared first on Complete Wellbeing.

A clean home and a healthy body are the pre-requisites of personal wellbeing. Though caring for oneself and the living space demands time, patience and dedication, there are no shortcuts to regular home and personal care. Maintaining high levels of hygiene is necessary for every family and this is where personal hygiene products and home-cleaning agents step in.

Caring for your home

There is nothing more satisfying than a clean, tidy and well-kept house that you can call your home.

Thorough and regular home-cleaning includes:

Throwing out the garbage everyday

Sweeping and mopping the floors with good-quality brooms and disinfectants that have a pleasant odour

Scrubbing, cleaning and disinfecting toilets, wash basins and showers

Keeping the drains clear with the help of drain openers and agents that remove clogs

Dusting and wiping the furniture, window sills and glass, fans and home accessories

Cleaning, dusting and vacuuming carpets and upholstery

Wiping kitchen-counter tops with good cleansers.

There are a wide range of home-cleaning products available in the market today that can assist you in cleaning and maintaining your living space. As a customer, it is important to make smart purchases through informed decisions and choose products that are best-suited for your home cleaning. Doing this will not only reduce the time spent in cleaning; it will also help in making sure that the cleaning process is thorough and effective.

How to choose the right products

Buying home-cleaning agents can be a confusing task, owing to the large variety of commercial products available in the market. To buy the right product for your home, you should:

Consider your requirement closely

Do you require a disinfectant for mopping the floor or a stain remover for removing nasty and obstinate stains?

Are you looking for a long broom to remove cobwebs on ceilings or do you require a brush to dust the netting on windows?

Understand the textures and surfaces

Different textures and surfaces require separate maintenance. Hence, invest in products that suit these textures. Remember, using harsh chemical products on mild surfaces can cause permanent harm.

Unglazed ceramic tiles scratch easily if cleaned with harsh acids. Mopping such floors with all-purpose cleaners is a good option. Similarly, marble and concrete floors may be cleaned with a mild disinfectant, clean water or an all-purpose cleaner.

Be informed: When picking a cleaning product for your home, make sure to read the label on these products for directions of use, components and suitability. Most of your questions regarding what’s right for your home will be answered by being aware.

Health concerns: Do you suffer from allergies? Pay special attention to the products you bring home as they can accentuate your allergic reactions. If you dislike strong smells, opt for mildly-scented cleaning solutions.

Safe home remedies and organic cleaning solutions are a good choice for those who prefer to stay away from unknown and harsh chemical products.

Caring for yourself

If you were to look at your shopping lists, you would be surprised to see just how many personal care and hygiene products you invest in on a monthly basis. From soaps, shampoos, conditioners and oils to gels, face wash, lotions and all kinds of make-up items, the list is truly endless. While there is nothing wrong in buying these, keep in mind that misuse of such personal care products can prove to be harmful.

Soaps: When buying soaps for personal use, keep in mind your skin type — dry [moisturising soaps], oily [cleansing soaps], normal [soaps neither meant for oily nor dry skin] or combination [cleansers, glycerine soaps].Using a soap that is meant for a different skin type than your own can lead to skin eruptions and reactions.

Shampoos: Identify your hair type and then select a shampoo best suited for it — dry [hydrating shampoo and moisturising conditioner], oily [cleansing shampoos], susceptible to dandruff [anti-dandruff shampoos]. If you are not sure, consult a hair specialist.Buy products that are ideal for use in specific seasons. You may want to change your shampoo after a few months so that your hair does not become immune to it through continuous use.

Toothbrush and toothpaste: Opt for a toothbrush that has soft bristles. These are ideal for regular use as they do not harm the gums like hard brushes do. Pick a toothpaste that leaves you feeling fresh and clean and don’t forget to consult a dentist in the event that you experience any pain or discomfort in your mouth.

Your body is yours to care

When it comes to buying products for oneself, you are your best guide. There is no dearth of skin, hair and body care products available in the market today, with new ones being introduced almost everyday.

In the midst of so many choices, it is easy to get swept away into buying products that are not required and which may do more harm than good in the long run.

Hence, the wisest thing to do is:

Understand your body type and then choose products that are best suited for your specific need.

Read the labels on products such as shampoos and soaps carefully before buying them. These labels mention their contents as well as their suitability for skin and hair types.

Purchase products that you really need. Don’t unnecessarily experiment with your skin, hair and body by using new products without being sure of their suitability.

Watch out for negative signs such as skin eruptions, rashes, redness, toothache or excessive hair fall. Did you change your toothbrush, shampoo, soap or oil recently? Stop using them and consult a doctor.

Avoid using products that have strong fragrances and excessive chemicals especially if you suffer from allergies.

Look for products that are organic, mild and use natural ingredients if possible.

Whenever in doubt, you should consult a good dermatologist, hair expert or your trusted hair dresser.

Some safe home-cleaning options

Vinegar can act as a window cleaner as well as help in removing grease and soap mildew.

Lemon juice can be used to polish wooden furniture and for cleaning glass.

Salt mixed in lemon juice helps in removing rust.

Red chilli powder can keep ants away.

If marriages are all about give and take, the time spent with each other during honeymoon lays the foundation for glorious days to come.

Honeymoon is certainly one of those valuable turning points that pave the path for a strong and happy married life ahead. Away from the pressures of daily life, work and responsibilities, it also provides the perfect opportunity for the bride and groom to get to know each other in maximum privacy.

Selecting a destination

Considering the number of choices of honeymoon destinations available today, it might not be an easy task to “zero-in” on one’s perfect destination. However, with a little bit of research and planning, couples can select a place that appeals to both.

Climate. Do you both love the sight of snow, or would you prefer getting a sun tan on a beautiful beach? Depending on the kind of climate that you both enjoy, you may want to select a hill station, or a seaside resort.

Budget. Are you prepared to splurge on your honeymoon, or do you have a budget in mind that you would like to follow? Based on your budget, narrow down to a romantic getaway that falls within your budget and, at the same time, proves to be everything you want it to be.

Duration. Realistically speaking, how many days can you steal away from work etc., to go for your all-important honeymoon destination? A week is a must, but in case time is a constraint, it is advisable to select a destination that is close-by.

Discuss expectations. All of us have day-dreamed about our ideal honeymoon jaunt at some point of time in our lives. This is the time to talk about it! Do you have a favourite holiday destination that you would love to re-explore with your partner? Is there a place that the two of you want to see together? Do you wish for a secluded beach resort, or an adventurous mountain getaway? Find out each others’ interests and reach a common decision.

In many families, parents, or relatives, of the bride or the groom may gift tickets for honeymoon. If they consult you to know your preference for a destination, don’t shy away from telling them your choice once you have consulted with your partner.

Remember, the next few days are all about you and your partner. So, make the most of it!

Choices galore

From lofty mountains to glistening seas, beaches and untouched natural plains, there is no dearth of romantic honeymoon destinations in India, owing to its vastness and breathtaking geographical diversities.

The post For a Beautiful Bathroom appeared first on Complete Wellbeing.

Among all the household chores, one task that most of us dislike doing is bathroom cleaning.

Since the bathroom is one of the most frequently used areas of the home, it is also the one that gets dirty very easily. It, therefore, requires proper and thorough cleaning, every single day.

If basic hygiene and proper cleanliness are not maintained, your bathroom can easily turn into an unmanageable germ factory. Add to that stubborn stains, unpleasant odour, and a disagreeable look, you have a bathroom that you would only disapprove.

One day at a time

It may seem difficult, but frequent and regular cleaning is the only way by which you can prevent your bathroom from becoming dirty and unhygienic. A little care everyday can save you the trouble of spending endless hours at a stretch in bathroom cleaning.

Don’t procrastinate

Whether you are short of time, tired or plain lazy, try your best not to put off bathroom cleaning for another day. Besides following your daily cleaning regime, make it a habit to clean whenever required.

Make it a family affair

Everyone wants to use a bathroom that is neat and tidy, and for this each member of the family must do their bit in maintaining bathroom cleanliness.

Here are simple tips which can be incorporated easily into your daily routine – to make your bathroom clean, beautiful and impressive.

Bathroom ventilation and lighting

Entering a stuffy and dingy bathroom can be a dreadful experience.

A good bathroom should be well-ventilated and airy. For this, it is essential to install an exhaust fan and ceiling fan. If there is a window in the bathroom, leave it open for sometime everyday

Dimly-lit bathrooms can be very depressing. It is a good idea to install bright tube lights that give better lighting

Invest in good quality and aromatic air-fresheners for the bathroom.

Bathroom mirror and surface

A good bathroom should have clean mirrors and glass surfaces.

Clean the bathroom mirror with a wet newspaper from time to time. After all, who likes to look into a spotted, faded and dirty mirror?

Spray a good cleaning agent on all other glass surfaces as well as the shower cubicle, doors etc., and wipe with a clean, soft cloth. Doing so will also clear water spots.

Washbasin

The washbasin should be scrubbed with a brush and a good cleaner, as often as possible. If you do not have a rack to store bathroom accessories such as soaps, toothpaste, shaving cream etc., place them on the basin surface, and try to keep the space dry by draining out excess water after every use.

Bathtub and shower cubicles

Daily cleaning of the bathtub is essential to maintain good hygiene.

If you use a bathtub, it is very important to clean it everyday, both from the inside and outside

Pay special attention to the sides and corners of the bathtub and scrub with a good brush to prevent the formation of mildew

Check the drainage of the bathtub, and make sure it is not blocked

It is a good idea to have a rack fitted on the wall, close to the bathtub which can hold bath items such as soaps, shampoos, bath salts, oils etc.,

The shower area/cubicle should be cleaned daily. If you notice reduced water flow from the shower, get a plumber to check and clean it. There may be salt deposits which block the shower and reduce the water supply

Water spots on glass doors after a shower, with and without warm water, leave ugly tell-tale signs. Hence, the doors in the shower area must be wiped with a clean cloth after every bath

you use shower curtains, choose a day during the week, or the weekend, to take them off and clean them. After using the shower, put the curtains to one side so that there is ventilation and the shower area is dry.

Commode

The inside and outside of the commode, the toilet seat, the cistern etc., should be cleaned with separate brush and cleaning agents.

Insert an in-cistern toilet cleaner [into the cistern] for continuous cleaning and fresh disinfected water after each flush

When not in use, the toilet seat must be covered.

Tiles

The bathroom tiles must be cleaned frequently with a sponge and good soap powder

It is advisable to get a professional cleaner to clean the entire bathroom with acid at least once a month.

Common bathroom etiquette

The bathroom door should always be kept closed.

Dustbin

Keep a closed dustbin lined with a garbage bag in your bathroom.

Wipers

Every family member should get into the habit of using a wiper whenever they see excess water on the bathroom floor. Doing so will not only keep the bathroom floor dry, it will also keep it clean and spotless.

Soap case

Any excess water that is left in the soap case will keep the case and the soap damp leading to the formation of soap scum and mildew. Make it a habit to wash the soap case and drain out excess water after every bath.

Clean the soap case from time to time with an old toothbrush to remove the collected soap scum. Liquid hand wash dispensers are a good option for your bathrooms, especially for the guest bathroom as it minimises the formation of soap scum and mildew.

All other bathroom accessories such as buckets, mugs, bowls and racks should be cleaned regularly.

Drains

The drains in the bathroom should be cleaned and cleared so that there are no blockages. Good quality net, or sieve, that does not rust should be fitted on top of the drains.

Towels

Hang a clean hand towel on a ring near the washbasin. Change it daily. Do not leave wet clothes in the bathroom.

Cleaning agents for the bathroom

You can find a wide range of bathroom cleaning agents and all-purpose detergents in the market. Always have a fresh stock of all essential items and store them separately, away from the reach of children.

It is up to you to take care of your bathroom. Give it a touch of warmth and personalise this space with some flowers, or a few decoration pieces.

Just as the human body functions all day and night, so do germs that surround us.

Germs are all-pervasive and can be found everywhere – in the air we breathe, the things we touch, and the food we eat. Though the human body is equipped to fight most microbes, a body with a weak immune system may be unable to fight them off. This can lead to the spread of diseases and illnesses.

Germ factor

Germs are microscopic living organisms that enter the human body and use up all its essential nutrients. The toxins which they produce lead to a plethora of allergies, including high fevers, coughs, diarrhoea, and so on. Food poisoning is also a common problem – it is caused through unhygienic and contaminated food items, food that is not processed properly, reheated meat products, and cross-contamination between raw and ready-to-eat products.

Some of the most common forms of microbes include bacteria, fungi, viruses, and protozoa.

Germs hate hygiene

Even though we may want to create a germ-free world for ourselves and our children, this is not possible. As upsetting as it may seem, the truth is that we don’t even have to step out of our house to become susceptible to germs! Our homes – especially, the kitchen – are often the most inviting breeding grounds for harmful microbes that are not visible to the naked eye. This makes them even more dangerous.

Want to scare away those bad guys [germs] from your body and your home? Use your most effective ammunition – hygiene to fight them off.

Germs can’t thrive in clean surroundings

To control and combat the spread of harmful disease-causing germs, each us must maintain high levels of hygiene, personally and in our surroundings.

Food hygiene

Wash your hands thoroughly before handling, cooking, or eating food

Always eat hygienically-prepared food

Reduce and control the spread of microbes and bacterial action in food that often leads to food poisoning

Use simple, yet effective food preservation techniques:

Refrigeration and freezing of food items such as meat, vegetables, and fruits

Heating food, or cooking, thoroughly to kill microbes

Blanching and canning.

Simple hygiene tips

Wash your hands, wrists, and fingers, thoroughly after using the bathroom, before cooking/eating food, and after coming back home from the outdoors

Use a tissue while sneezing, or coughing, and get into the habit of disposing off the used tissues into the dustbin immediately

Have a good bath everyday and keep your body clean

Teach your children the importance of hygienic living and its essentials.

Kitchen, the heart of your home

Let’s say you have taken care of both your personal hygiene and the hygiene of your food items. Do you think you are now safe from germs at home? Not really! This is because you have failed to pay attention to the most important and often neglected part of your home – the kitchen. Of all the rooms in your home, the kitchen is undoubtedly the most preferred abode for germs.

Kitchen ventilation and exhaust

Keep the kitchen well-ventilated and airy with plenty of natural and artificial light

Use good quality nets on the doors and windows to prevent flies and other insects from entering the kitchen

Install an effective chimney and exhaust fan to provide an outlet to the smoke while cooking.

Store your kitchen essentials and food items in air-tight containers to keep them fresh and safe from insects.

Moisture-free

Keep your kitchen dry

Clear clogged drains immediately and clean them properly as this is the area that is most susceptible to bacteria and germs

Get those faulty and leaking taps fixed. Remember, moisture invites germs and propagates their spread

Sweep and mop the kitchen floor with a good disinfectant [phenyl], mixed in water

Store your kitchen essentials and food items in air-tight containers to keep them fresh and safe from insects.

Clean kitchen surface

Wipe and clean all kitchen surfaces — platforms, cabinet tops, counter tops, cutting boards, table tops and work area regularly, before and after use

Use disinfectant spray or wipes on sink faucets, refrigerator handles, stove handles, cupboard handles, trashcans, doorknobs, and any other area that you touch with your hands

Wipe the stove after cooking and remove any food particles that may have fallen on and around the stove to avoid attracting ants, flies, cockroaches.

Cooking etiquette

The person responsible for cooking food must understand the importance of maintaining hygiene from the moment they enter the kitchen, till the time when cooking is done.

Wash your hands thoroughly and put on a clean apron before working in the kitchen

Sneeze or cough, if at all, into a hanky, or tissue, and do not touch your body when cooking or handling food items

Don’t leave your hair loose during cooking. Tie it up and put it back to avoid hair from falling/getting in the food

Cook all food items thoroughly, especially meat/meat products

Wash vegetables, fruits and other items with clean, filtered water before cooking them

Keep all food items properly covered in the fridge

Check expiry dates and throw away leftovers, if they are old and do not smell right.

Cleaning agents

Many a time, objects meant for cleaning the kitchen actually contribute in spreading harmful germs. Always use different cloths for different purposes. Sometimes, it is better to use disposable cloth rather than using the same cloth every day. Avoid the use of sponge, as far as possible. Your kitchen should be a place of pride and delight. It should welcome you each day without any worry of germs, diseases, or poor hygiene.

India is the only millionaire. the One land that all men desire to see, and having seen once, by even a glimpse, would not give that glimpse for all the shows of all the rest of the globe combined.

– Mark Twain

India is a land of many different cultures, traditions, and people – the only country in the world that portrays unity in such cultural diversity.

Bordered in the north by lofty mountain ranges and covered by beautiful tropical rain forests, plateaus and mesmerising beaches in the south, India is truly a sight for sore eyes!

As you travel from north to south and from east to west of the country, you will experience a plethora of different climates, divided largely into hot [summers], wet [monsoons] and cold [winter].

Rain, rain, everywhere

Monsoon in India is the all-important binding force that links the summer and the winter months.

By early June, the first signs of monsoon become visible towards the south of India and cover the entire northern regions by July. It is during this time, that the hot, dusty and dry weather is replaced by wet, cool and humid weather, depending on which part of country you are in and the amount of rain in that region. The monsoon rains are extremely important for nourishing the dry lands after the summer months, and it is a boon for the farmers who long for these rains in just the right proportion. The falls and waterways receive a surge of new life and are replenished during the season.

Monsoon magic

Monsoons are one of the most romantic and extremely liked seasons in India. After the first showers, nature seems to be at its best — the dancing leaves on the trees, the bushes and shrubs as well as the birds and squirrels resting on the trees. They all come alive, fresh and full of life. The aroma of the fresh wet earth fills the atmosphere and lingers on as if reminding you to live in the moment and enjoy life.

No matter how tense, upset or sad you may be, the monsoon rains have the magical ability to take away all your sadness and uplift your mood. Monsoons bring with them a refreshing coolness which soothes the mind, body, and soul.

Break free

If you are one of those people who enjoy getting wet in the rain, or simply love to admire and experience the freshly bathed nature in all its glory, you must consider planning a trip this monsoon. However, before making plans for your visit, you must make detailed enquiries about climatic conditions and the amount of rains predicted in that area.

Destinations galore

I understood the power of God and the meaning of the phrase, “Faith can move mountains,” through a real life experience – my aunt and her undeterred faith in God.

My aunt was expecting her first child. During the third month of her pregnancy, she had to travel to another town for her niece’s wedding.

Just before coming back home, my aunt visited a temple known for its great powers and prayed for her unborn child. A few guests returned with her and stayed over for a few days. During this time, one of the guest’s little daughter perched herself up dangerously on the balcony. In an attempt to save her from a serious fall, my auntie pulled and picked up the heavy three-year-old. Later, the girl’s mother, on hearing her daughter’s narrow escape from a bad fall, thanked my aunt profusely. The guests left that evening.

By late evening auntie started suffering from serious abdominal pain and discomfort which increased so much that she had to go and see the doctor, the following morning. After examining her, the doctor informed my aunt and uncle that she was going to abort, any time soon. This came as a rude shock to the couple. They begged the doctor to do everything in her power to save the baby. However, the doctor said that nothing could be done now, and a miscarriage was imminent.

Sad and worried, uncle and auntie came back home. Their neighbour, an elderly and kind lady, came to find out what the doctor said. Auntie told her the worrying news and, in an emotional state, she stated that she was willing to do anything to save her baby. All she now wanted was her baby to survive. She was even willing to have a weak child.

The neighbour asked her not to worry and take rest. In the meantime, the kind neighbour got together a few people and raised one side of my aunt’s bed by putting bricks under it. Then, she asked her to lie down with her feet on the raised side of the bed. My aunt did as she was told and started praying to God to save her child.

The neighbour took over the responsibility of taking care of my aunt’s needs while her daughter looked after the running of the house, cooking etc., At first, my aunt became worse, but this did not stop her from fighting for her child. Nothing could come between her will power and her unfaltering faith in God.

At last, after staying in bed for a month, aunt started recovering and getting stronger day-by-day. Soon enough, she was able to take care of her household chores and started leading a near-normal but careful life. Throughout the next six months, she kept praying to God to save her baby and give her a good life.

The miracle baby came to the world, and though weak and tiny, she had her mother’s will power and faith shining in her eyes. Today, my cousin is a strong, charming and successful woman. She is 27 and she continues to marvel at her birth and life.

It’s my strong feeling and conviction that she was saved only by my aunt’s complete faith and trust in God. If this isn’t true inspiration for each one of us to believe in the power of God, faith and destiny, what is?

The human body is a sophisticated machine that functions well only when each and every part is in sync with one another. Any imbalance, or stress, or deficiency within, gets reflected on the outside leaving tell-tale signs on our face.

Are you one of those people who considers your eyes to be your best feature and carry ugly dark circles under them? You are not alone. Many of us suffer from dark circles under the eyes from time to time.

Dark circles

Eye circles, also called “bags under the eyes,” are dark blemishes that form all around and under the eyes. Since the skin around the eye is thin and very delicate, dark circles look prominent.

People who are healthy, happy, and in a state of wellbeing – physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually – have a radiating face. Those of us who are stressed, tired and unhealthy, often suffer from dark circles – they are precursors of health problems and internal deficiencies.

Causes

A number of factors are responsible if your eyes are plagued by dark circles:

Insufficient sleep and fatigue. Our body replenishes itself and increases circulation to the face when we sleep. However, lack of sufficient sleep, or disturbed sleep, is one of the most common causes of dark circles. They can make your face look pale.

Nutrient deficiencies and dehydration. A lack of healthy and balanced diet can lead to nutritional deficiencies [iron, calcium, vitamins etc.,] in the body causing discolouration or dark patches under your eyes. Dehydration is another cause. This happens when you drink less water and consume too much of sugar and alcohol.

Stress. If you have been working too hard without giving your body that much-needed rest, it is bound to show on your face. Excessive stress, tension and anxiety within, will eventually show on the outside as well in the form of puffy eyes and under eye circles.

Heredity. Dark eye circles may run in families due to genetic causes. In such cases, getting rid of the discolouration becomes next to impossible. However, you must try to do everything in your power to make sure that it does not get aggravated owing to carelessness.

Allergies. It has been seen that many people suffer from various kinds of allergies that aggravate, or cause dark circles. Excessive exposure to sun rays can also increase the problem.

Prevention is better

Now, that you know some of the common causes of under eye dark circles, it is time to look within and find out what it is that you are doing wrong.

The best thing to do is to bring about positive changes in your lifestyle, cleanse your body from within, and inculcate good habits. This will help you to slowly eliminate all the negativities from your life – negativities are responsible for dark circles and making your face look insipid.

Eat healthy. Consume fresh fruits and vegetables in your daily diet

Sleep well. Get plenty of sound sleep everyday so that your mind and body are rested and prepared for the next day

Exercise regularly and practice yoga. This will reduce your stress and anxiety levels and you will reach a stage of complete wellbeing

Refrain from smoking and drinking

If you suffer from allergies, consult a doctor/therapist and find out what is causing it

Drink 10-12 glasses of water everyday.

Care for Your Eyes

As you begin to deal with your dark circles, here are a few natural remedies you can use to reduce them around the eyes –

Empty teabags. Refrigerate used tea bags to cool them. Once cool, place them on your eyes and leave them on for 10-12 minutes [chamomile tea is especially effective]

Thin cucumber slices. Tilt your head backwards and place thin slices of cucumber on your eyes for 5-10 minutes. Make sure the cucumber touches the dark skin under your eyes

Grated potato. Tie some grated potato in a cloth and place over the eyes for 15-20 minutes

Sunglasses. Wear good quality sunglasses when you step out during the day to protect your eye/skin from the sun’s rays

Massage. Press the skin around your eyes with your middle finger using cold cream, moisturiser, or almond oil. Gently massage from the inner to the outer corner of your eyes

Spoon. Place a cold spoon on your eyes so that it is in contact with the affected skin

Rose water. Dip cotton in cold rose water and place it over the dark skin around your eyes for 5-10 minutes.

Good old make-up

If dark circles run in the family, you may have to use make-up to conceal them. Some of the most common options include concealers, under eye creams, and moisturisers with vitamin E and K. Have doubts? Speak to your dermatologist/therapist.
