"As you think so shall you become" is not a cliché—it's the fundamental truth. Your dominant thoughts are responsible for all that happens to you

“OK guys, this is it, the big one. Remember, stay loose and relaxed; don’t tighten up and above all, DON’T DROP THE BATON.” These were the coach’s final instructions minutes before the start of the men’s 4 x 100 meter relay at the state track and field championships. We took our positions around the track. I was the slowest runner on the team but we had the fastest starter and best finisher in the state and were the favourite to win.

I usually focused my attention on the length of the transfer zone, where I would smoothly receive and hand off the baton but this time the coach’s words filled my thoughts. I turned and faced the start line. A loud CRACK from the starter’s pistol and they were off. As the sprinters pounded toward me, one thought repeated in my head: “DON’T DROP THE BATON.”

52 seconds later, our fastest runner streaked across the finish line; dead last. I had dropped the baton.

What went wrong?

We had raced as a team for two years and not once in the hundreds of practices and competitions had I dropped the baton. What had gone wrong this time? Had the coach inadvertently planted the thought in my mind? Would the result have been different if his final instructions were “most of all, pass the baton smoothly and safely”?

I had fallen victim to one of the most fundamental laws of the universe: What you think about most, becomes your reality. It is as certain as the law of gravity.

How affirmations work

Affirmations are verbal declarations, which have a powerful effect on our conscious and subconscious minds and ultimately our actions. They must NEVER be stated in the negative. We must choose our words carefully. Psychologists, neuroscientists and metaphysicians all agree that the subconscious cannot understand or acknowledge a negative. The affirmation, “I don’t [negative] want to be fat” is heard by the subconscious as, “I want to be fat.” We cannot help focusing on the word fat. The positive alternative, “I want to be slim” would be much more beneficial.

Don’t believe me? Close your eyes and repeat this statement three times. “I am not afraid.” Open your eyes. Which word stands out? We cannot help it; even though afraid is what we do not want to be, it is certainly the dominant word our mind focuses on. Now try repeating, “I feel safe.” Notice the difference? What we think and focus on the most becomes our reality. This is true in any aspect of life.

Archimedes formulated the principle of flotation in 200 BC. But Dr Wayne Dyer rightly observed, “The law of flotation was not discovered by contemplating the sinking of things.”

Success follows your dominant thoughts

I have read biographies of many great achievers. They all share a single trait—their thoughts, and thus their actions, are dominated by what they want to achieve. How they might achieve it is secondary. Since they keep thinking about succeeding most, success becomes their reality.

I spend a great deal of time in group homes and institutions talking to seniors. “What is your purpose, your goal, your dream, your worthy cause?” I ask. Sadly, many say they have none. Then I ask, “Well what is important to you, what do you want in life?” More silence. “OK, tell me what you don’t want in life?” Within seconds the responses pour out.

“I don’t want to be sick.”
“I don’t want to be poor.”
“I don’t want to be lonely.”
“I don’t want to be fat.”
“I don’t want to die.”
“I don’t want to die alone.”
“I don’t want to be senile.”

The sad truth is, most people are much better at telling you what they don’t want in life than at telling what they do want in life. What they focus on and think about most is what they don’t want and that becomes their reality.

Can we think your way to sickness? You bet!

Does this hold true for our health? Certainly. Our brain controls every part of our body. The science of biofeedback has conclusively proven that thoughts have the power to control the physical states of our bodies. We can raise or lower our temperature, change our heart rate and blood pressure, and direct blood to different body parts all by our thoughts alone.

Our thoughts can also have devastating effects on our health. The most destructive and toxic element unleashed on the human body is stress. Where does it come from? It’s not a bacterium, a virus, an amoeba, a fungus or mould. Nor is it a burn, trauma or pressure injury. We cannot see it, touch it, cut it, isolate it, weigh it, grow it, inoculate against it or transmit it to another person. It exists only in the mind, but its devastating effects are felt in every physical system of the body.

Stress is produced by what we think of most. Our stressful thoughts manifest themselves in the physical plane and show up in every organ and system.

Most people pay little or no attention to their health until something goes wrong. When the episode passes and the body heals, they often go back to their old habits, thoughts and lifestyles until the next time their body’s defence systems get overwhelmed again. Some, however, heed the warning and start considering and practising disease prevention.

Although this seems like a positive step in the right direction, it can be greatly improved. The problem is we are still focused on disease, even though it is the prevention of disease.

A far more successful strategy would be to focus on wellness. This is not simply semantics. Dominating thoughts of wellness can only lead to wellness.

Don’t miss » The law of attraction: the final piece of the puzzle

What are you focussing on?

Do you think any great general in history ever won a battle by focusing on how not to lose?

If your sole goal in life is to accumulate great wealth [I feel sorry for you if it is], do you think there is any chance of attaining it by focusing on how not to be poor. Does the circus performer say to himself, “Don’t fall,” as he steps onto the high wire? Will you ever find love by filling your mind with thoughts of how not to be lonely?

What you think about most becomes your reality. Do not be against illness; rather direct your thoughts toward complete and total wellness and it will become your reality. You possess the power. It’s all in your head.

The way you live your life is based on a series of habits and established patterns. By replacing old habits with new ones, you can change your life for the better.

Re-address your spending

Catherine, a 30-year-old professional woman who is one of my clients, told me she couldn’t afford to buy a property. We discussed how much she spent on clothes, alcohol, going out, impulse purchases, magazines, unused hair and make-up products, and came to the conclusion that it amounted to a lot of wasted money. I then worked with her to change the negative spending habits in her mind. Within a couple of months of making changes to her spending, Catherine had paid off some of her credit card debts. Within a year, she had saved enough for a deposit and, by being realistic about the areas she could afford to buy in, was able to buy a property.

My advice

By looking at the financial facts, you can see where you are going wrong. Different choices and decisions will make your dreams come true.

Money can come from unexpected sources

A client called Trisha told me that she had to move to another part of the country temporarily, for six months, and didn’t need her furniture at the new place. She was stressed because she didn’t have the money to put her furniture into storage until she returned to the area and she couldn’t leave it in the flat, which she was only renting. After working to release the negative stress, I told her to imagine the move had all worked out amazingly well and that it was financially amazing too. She was skeptical, but said she would give it a go. Two weeks later, Trisha came back for another session and told me the most amazing story. A man who was a potential new tenant came to view the flat she was moving out of. As he was leaving, he popped his head back around the door and said, ‘You wouldn’t be interested in letting me rent your furniture for six months if I take the flat, would you?’ So, on the day Trisha moved out, she packed her food, clothes and toiletries into her car and drove away. In exchange for being able to leave all her furniture and general household belongings in the flat, she was being paid £400 a month. Instead of having to pay storage fees, she had an income.

My advice

Work to release the negative beliefs by following the techniques in this book and then presume things will work out amazingly well. If you do have to store your belongings have a good clear out so you don’t pay to store things you don’t need.

Amazing things can happen

A client called Nigel told me he couldn’t continue struggling to pay all the costs of having children and general living expenses and that, as he only had enough money to pay the interest on his mortgage, the amount he owed was never going to reduce. After working in the session to release his negative fears, I told him, “Things can happen. Things change. Think amazing.” Less than a week later, Nigel’s father-in -law decided to give his daughter and her husband £100,000 to reduce their mortgage. Nigel was amazed at how the amazing had worked!

My advice

You may not have a rich relative, but you don’t need to know what the amazing, unexpected things will be. Just know that they will be amazing. Be open to paying off your mortgage early. Say to yourself, ‘We’ve paid off the mortgage in an amazing way.

Even a bad situation can turn into the best thing

A self-employed client lost his best customer, which meant that his income stopped almost overnight. I helped him to believe that it was amazing for him. A few days after his appointment with me, he woke up with the idea of pushing into other markets. The old client had made him so busy he had overlooked more lucrative areas of work. He kept the amazing feeling going, which led him to find new and better clients.

My advice

By releasing the negative beliefs and keeping in the amazing zone, you can make even better things happen.

Get the job you want with the salary you want

Sarah, a freelance journalist, was offered a dream job working for a magazine. But she didn’t want to accept it because it involved a significant reduction in her salary. I did some hypnotherapy sessions with her. I explained to her, “It isn’t your dream job unless you have the salary you want. You’ll make amazing things happen when you let go of old, limiting habits in your subconscious mind. After the session, Sarah’s new confidence and positive self-belief enabled her to tell her prospective employer that she would only accept the job if the salary was the figure she wanted. The company agreed to pay her what she asked for. So she got her dream job and dream salary, and over the next couple of months she used the money that was still owed to her to clear her credit cards, putting her totally on top of her finances. The amazing thing about this story is that the magazine that gave Sarah her dream job and salary was the same one that had originally commissioned her as a freelance journalist to write an article about how my hypnotherapy services could make one wealthier!

My advice

Think through how amazing you are and why you deserve a better salary. Then have the confidence to ask for Think amazing outcome. Say, ‘I can do it. I am doing it. It is done. I have an amazing job and amazing salary.” If you don’t get that job, your new positivity will already be creating an opportunity for something better to come our way.

Increase your sales

Mark was a salesman who had had a run of a few months with low sales. He began to feel bad about selling and found that he couldn’t tell prospective customers about all the products because it sounded as though he was trying to get lots of money from them. So, to avoid the anxiety he felt when he told them about all the items in the range, he limited himself to mentioning just a few. After I worked to release the recent negative program that had built up in his mind, he felt relief. A few weeks later, he called to say that he had been responsible for the biggest sale the company had ever had!

My advice

If you are having a bad run of sales, be aware that it is just a habit that has developed in your subconscious mind and that can be easily rectified. Think of selling as informing the client of all the options. They will ultimately do what is right for them and knowing all the options available will be helpful to them. Hypnotherapy sessions and recordings are perfect for keeping in the positive sales zone. In fact, every sales person I have ever worked with as a hypnotherapist has gone on to increase their sales figures. Try hypnotherapy to increase your wealth Sam bought my hypnotherapy recording Money – Increase your Wealth, which she listened to in order to help her change bad money beliefs and get out of a financial rut. After listening to it over a period of two months, she doubled her annual income from £18,000 to £36,000 because she had the confidence to apply for a much better paid job and – to her surprise – she got it.

My advice

Be open to hypnotherapy.

Be your own boss

Steve, an experienced builder and senior executive in a building firm, had the idea of starting up a new building business but, due to the recession, he thought it might be too risky. After some appointments with me, he decided to leave his old job. Then, by using the amazing zone feeling, he self-talked himself into success and used other techniques described in this book to keep himself positive. He did some freelance work to help pay his bills before his own building projects were up and running. ‘I had the self-belief to go after my dream despite the recession; he told me. ‘Because I had a new inner confidence, I packed in my job and have begun to create my own destiny:With hard work and believing in the amazing, his turnover in the first year was one million pounds! By the third year, he was turning over five million pounds.

You may also like: How your emotions rule your money

My advice

Remember, Steve was starting a business with skills he had built up over many years, which is very different from starting a new business that you know nothing about. So, while you build a new business and new skills, be aware that you may need to keep doing your old job to support yourself until you start earning money. Being self-employed is hard work, so be prepared to put in the hours to set things up. Treat every customer with respect, as they could lead you to more customers. Keep expenses down, and be careful – it could be a while before you build up a good reputation and create a good income. Sometimes in life, you just have to go for things because they feel right. Your determination and good feelings will make you successful. Focus determines your reality. Believe amazing things will happen, but be grounded too.

In less than three months, I completely changed my life.

I quit smoking, and it was really easy

I lost 30 pounds, and kept them off

My husband and I went from being separated and discussing divorce to having a blissful, connected partnership

I reconnected with two dear friends I had not spoken to in many years

I stopped taking six different prescription medications

I found a way to stop having seizures

I discovered and corrected health problems which had plagued me for over 20 years.

I did all of this with the proper use of the Law of Attraction. The Law of Attraction (LoA), is simply this: whatever you focus on in life, you will get. Only catch is, the LoA does not understand negatives. Words and phrases such as no, not, don’t, except for simply don’t exist with attraction.

How I got my healthy body back

Prior to fully understanding how the LoA works, I begged doctors to tell me what was wrong with me. I insisted on getting as many tests as possible, and took any medication the doctors recommended. My focus for the past 20 years had been on “what is wrong with my body” and for 20 years my body was a miserable wreck. I had a cyst in my brain and seizures, and was reaching the point where I spent more time taking pills with my meals than eating my meals.

Once I understood how this focussing on ‘what you want’ really works, I declared out loud every single day: “I want to be healthy” and “Thank you for my healthy body.” Out of the blue, I got a referral to a new doctor, and a new set of tests. Now, I had gone through dozens, if not hundreds, of tests prior to this—but once I focussed on health, this test revealed that I had low B12. No one had ever tested me for that before, and it was the hidden culprit that had been keeping me sick! With the B12 shots my seizures stopped, and so did my migraines, depression, muscle cramps and crippling fatigue. The cyst in my brain went away, I started to lose weight, and my healthy body began to take over.

When the withdrawal bothered me, I distracted myself with a video game, music or a walk

Every time I tried to quit smoking prior to this, that’s what I thought about—not smoking. Since LoA and the word ‘not’ do not co-exist, it means I was really thinking about smoking. So wondering how long since I quit meant I was really just re-focussing on smoking, over and over. This time I succeeded by not thinking or talking about smoking at all to anyone. I did not tell my friends, family or co-workers that I was about to quit or that I had quit. I did not say “I really want one”, “I’m in withdrawal”, or any of those phrases I had used in the past. Instead, I simply saw myself as healthy. And I did not talk about cigarettes or withdrawal symptoms to anyone at all, ever. When the withdrawal bothered me, I distracted myself with a video game, music or a walk.

We went from ‘almost divorced’ to ‘happily married’

I had the same stumbling blocks with other areas of my life before I finally ‘got it’ months ago. Previously, I kept wondering what was wrong with my marriage. I kept telling my husband what he was doing wrong and what he was failing to do right. “You never kiss me when I walk by”, “I can’t remember the last time you complimented me” were common statements I would make, thinking I was helping things. I wasn’t. I was just bringing my attention, and his, to the negative and bad things about us, making us both miserable. So I changed that to thanking him profusely when he did something, anything, nice. I made it a point to kiss him more, and complimented him more—and he started doing it right back to me. We focussed on our strengths and the strengths of our relationship together, and we nurtured and nourished those things—and they began to grow, and the list of things to like grew bigger, and saved our marriage.

You may also like: The law of attraction: the final piece of the puzzle

I did all of this while my brain was not working right, not by a long shot. Before that first B12 shot, my mind raced with negative thoughts all day every day. Small negative thoughts to huge horrid thoughts, tens of thousands of yucky dark nightmares cycling through—yet I managed to change my life.

A list of things that I do to help me achieve my desired results

I have eliminated as much negativity as possible, from every area of my life. I have stopped watching television. I watch my TV shows on Netflix instead, because this way I can avoid the commercials which I feel draw my attention on what’s not right.

I do not watch news shows, do not read the newspaper, and do not go to news websites. I turn my head the other direction when faced with newspapers and tabloids at the checkout in the grocery store. I spend time adjusting the settings on Facebook to show me less stories about death and war. I have changed the settings for my friends’ posts so I wouldn’t see when they post about negative items either.

I spent time going through the music I liked to listen to, and made a playlist of positive songs. Some of the songs I had been listening to previously were about heartbreak, bad days, mean bosses, going crazy, anger, vengeance, guilt, grief—and I used to not only listen to this music a lot but always sang along! All that did was bring those ugly things into my life, and caused me to focus on them over and over. Now I avoid them, one hundred per cent. Instead of playing the radio, I only play my custom playlist, with my positive songs.

Every single day, I only focus on what feels good. When negative thoughts start running through my head, I go and listen to my positive music. Or I look up pictures of kittens or babies, or read jokes, or watch an action movie. When all else fails, I go for a walk. I never strengthen my negative thoughts by talking about them, because I know that speaking is a powerful attractor. I only speak about what I truly want to have in my life.

I have made “being happy” a priority. Nothing is more important than keeping my mood positive. I walk away from my husband and hang up on my friends if I think I am about to argue with them, tell them how wrong they are, or why they are making me mad. So I clamp my mouth shut and escape until I change those thoughts and that mood—and they appreciate that when I am around, I am much more pleasant to be around.

I appreciate everything—the taste buds in my mouth when I take a bite of food, the soap when I wash my hands, the hair on my head, the running water in the tap… every little and big thing. Everyday, I give thanks hundreds of times for every good thing—especially learning how to use this incredible gift, and the ability to share this information with you. Thank you.

The great Indian mystic and thinker, Jiddu Krishnamurti, once said, “There may be no need to dream at all.”

And recent dream research has led to the possibility that dreams serve no purpose or function. Some researchers lean in the direction of these ideas:

Dreams are not necessary for either physical or psychological health.

There is reason to doubt that dreaming helps solve our day-to-day problems.

Dream interpretation may be a complete waste of time. And those who claim they know what dream symbols mean, may know nothing.

For example, if you dream that a person is chasing you down a dark street, does that mean you are running away from confronting someone about an issue? If you fall off a cliff and hit the ground, does that mean you, or someone you know, is about to die? Doubtful.

These above comments may surprise or annoy you. Yet you should be aware that much is new in the world of dream research. Let’s begin with a big myth that most people seem to believe—everyone dreams.

The world of non-dreamers

Some people don’t dream at all. It’s true. And they carry on with their lives and remain mentally healthy. You may scoff and say these people do dream but simply cannot remember their dreams. Research proves you wrong.

Many people who have suffered a traumatic brain injury, perhaps from a stroke or tumour, lose their ability to dream at all. Damage to the front area of the brain often leads to a condition known as global cessation of dreaming. The person no longer dreams or has completely lost the ability for dream recall.

You may also be surprised to learn that a small percentage of healthy people who have not had an injury do not dream either. How do researchers know this? It has to do with REM sleep. REM stands for rapid eye movement. Back in 1953, REM sleep was discovered by two researchers who noticed that the eyeballs moved beneath the lids when people were dreaming.

Until recently, REM sleep was always thought to mean a person was in the dream state. However, when sleep lab researchers observe some people in REM sleep and wake them up and ask them if they were dreaming, they say no. By the way, another new finding is that people can dream in non-REM sleep also.

Children who don’t dream

Another surprising finding is that young children under the age of nine have limited capability for dreaming. Renowned dream researcher David Foulkes points out that the brain has to develop the ability to dream. So contrary to popular belief, young children don’t dream much and the dreams they do have are not well developed until about the age of 10.

As for Krishnamurti’s comments above, he said a mind that is fully alive and aware has no need for dreams. When you are awake and intently observing the world around you, without judging or comparing, simply watching, your mind becomes so alive that dreams are unnecessary. Sleep then becomes a time of complete renewal and you enter a different state of being that is beyond the mind and dreams.

Yet, dreaming is something that most people do. However, we remember less than five per cent of what we dream about. So why do some people have such vivid, elaborate dreams? There are bad reasons and good reasons.

The dark side of elaborate dreams

Some people have dreams that are so elaborate; they act them out in a negative way. These are people with a sleep disorder called REM sleep behaviour disorder, also sometimes abbreviated as RBD.

Normally, during the dream state, the body is completely paralysed. Nature has made sure we cannot move while dreaming. The muscles go completely limp. Thankfully, we sleep in beds for the most part because if you were sitting in a chair and dreaming, you might find yourself on the floor.

However, in REM sleep behaviour disorder, the muscles are not paralysed. This can be dangerous because whatever vivid dream this person is having, they begin to physically act it out.

Imagine a person with RBD who is dreaming of being attacked by giant, poisonous butterflies. This person may swat and swing at the insects. Their arms flail; they may kick. There are many instances where bed partners have been hit with fists and severely injured. Sometimes furniture gets broken as the dreamer jumps on it or throws an alarm clock across the room.

The alarming dreams of new mothers

Postpartum infant dreams are another type of dream that can be quite vivid for new mothers. The dreams revolve around danger to their new babies. A mother may feel the child is lost or suffocating in their bed.

While sleeping, the mother may call out, cry, or feel around in the bed searching for the infant. In some cases, she may act out the dream and grab her bed partner, looking for the baby. There are even instances where the dreams are so real, the mother will sleepwalk in search of the infant.

The bright side of vivid, elaborate dreams

When I was a young boy, many moons ago, I had a favourite uncle I spent a lot of time talking with. He told me fanciful stories about his dreams. As long as he could remember he was able to fly in his dreams. I found this fascinating and was captivated by the wild tales he told me of the things he did and the people he met, all while he was asleep.

Not only could he fly, he could control everything that happened in his dreams. If he wanted to talk to someone, he had no fear of doing so. If he wanted to go somewhere, he’d go. He remembered colours, details, and exaggerated themes in these dreams.

This type of dreaming is known as lucid dreaming and is perhaps the most elaborate and fun type of dreaming. In lucid dreaming, just as with my uncle, a person is able to do almost anything they want. There are no rules. There are no limitations. There are no consequences. It’s almost as though you become a director of your own movie.

Prepare yourself to dream what you want

There are two possible reasons why some people have more elaborate dreams than others. First, some people are intently interested in their dreams. They make it a point to remember their dreams and write them down. If you would like to do the same, keep a dream journal or dream diary next to your bed. As soon as you wake up, write down what you were dreaming.

Second, some people, with practice, can tell themselves to dream about a particular topic, and they do. This can produce a more detailed dreaming experience.

Whether you dream or don’t, I think it’s clear there is a bridge that connects your waking life and your sleeping life. What happens when these two worlds merge into one? Only you can discover that for yourself by driving across that bridge. The vehicle that carries you is awareness.

There’s a secret ability of successful people that not many know and even fewer will tell you. Nearly all successful, self-made individuals have mastered the art of silencing or at least slowing down their mind. It is believed that we think anywhere between 60,000 to 100,000 [mostly] useless thoughts everyday. It’s like a monkey that lives in your mind, jumping from one thought to another, pointlessly and endlessly. By unleashing a cascade of crippling thoughts, this monkey robs you of your innate ability to live a happy, successful life. So, unless you tame this monkey, you will forever nurture self-doubt, fear and uncertainty.

As your mind is freed from the reign of the monkey, you begin to see possibilities you hitherto didn’t think existed. New vistas open up as unnecessary and self-defeating thoughts and beliefs pave way for clarity. The iconic entrepreneur Steve Jobs once said, “If you just sit and observe, you will see how restless your mind is. If you try to calm it, it only makes it worse, but over time it does calm, and when it does, there’s room to hear more subtle things—that’s when your intuition starts to blossom and you start to see things more clearly and be in the present more. Your mind just slows down, and you see a tremendous expanse in the moment. You see so much more than you could see before.”

But gagging your mind’s monkey requires that you first understand it; after all, it’s part of your own consciousness. This month, acclaimed author Danny Gregory escorts you into your mind and introduces you to the troublemaker that has been living there for as long as you can remember. He tells you from where the monkey came and how it established itself firmly in the deep recesses of your mind. “The monkey is a formidable foe. It is more devious than you and it has plenty of time on its hands. It can use everything you know against you, push every button, pull every lever, and it is unrelenting,” says Danny as he explains how the monkey, pretending to be your friend and well-wisher, fabricates stories to push you towards self-sabotage. He then flashes his torchlight on the dark corners of your mind to enable you to see and face the annoying ape that has held you back from your joys.

Once the mischief maker is exposed, you begin to understand the tricks it has employed to keep you stuck in a hamster wheel as you keep running but going nowhere in life. It’s now time to disembark from the worthless wheel and proceed in the direction of your goals and dreams. Of course the monkey will put up a fight, but worry not. The author gives you practical strategies to fight back—and win—against this formidable opponent.

As you resolve to no longer allow your strings to be pulled by this invisible inner critic, its defeat is inevitable. After all, it derives all its power from you. So read the full story here and seize back your power.

A feeling of heaviness in your heart or your head is not just a figure of speech

The term enlightenment is associated with a kind of spiritual illumination that is supposedly bestowed upon us by divine grace. Being so, it is beyond our control and there is little we can do to achieve it; it happens of its own accord. But what if I told you that there’s another way to be “enlightened”—a way that is within your control?

The word enlightenment derives from the word ‘light’. But ‘light’ also refers to the physical weight of an object. In this context, light is the antonym of heavy. And the word ‘heavy’ has great spiritual significance that goes beyond physical weight.

What Is Meant By a Heavy Heart

We often use the word ‘heavy’ figuratively to denote heaviness of the heart or the head. It’s difficult to find someone who hasn’t said, “My heart is heavy” at some time or another. Of course, we all know that our hearts and heads don’t become heavy in a literal sense—it’s only a figure of speech, right? Wrong!

In my opinion, a heavy heart or head is more than just a metaphor for mental or emotional distress. The feeling of heaviness always occurs owing to an excess of thoughts occupying our minds.

On an average, it is estimated that we think 60,000 different thoughts each day. Now consider this: if each thought actually weighed just a tiny bit, say a mere gram, our minds would be carrying a load of 60 kilos each day. Phew! That’s a lot of weight to carry around [and a lot of clutter to clear]. No wonder then that our heads and hearts feel heavy and over-burdened all the time—and that, in turn, results in all kinds of health problems ranging from migraines to high BP to heart attacks.

Also read » Enlightenment: chopping wood, carrying water

Try Meditation Whenever Your Heart Feels Heavy

Fortunately, meditation offers a way to ease the excess load on our poor, over-worked hearts and heads. It helps us empty our minds of the rubbish we accumulate day after day. The best way to meditate, according to the ancient sages, is to become a witness of our thoughts. You see, we can’t stop them from coming, but we can certainly avoid becoming a reservoir of thoughts. So, when thoughts enter the mind, don’t hold on to them, observe them. Become a passage and allow them to pass. Zen monk and teacher Shunryu Suzuki explains it this way: “Leave your front door and your back door open. Allow your thoughts to come and go. Just don’t serve them tea.”

Gradually, you will find yourself living more and more in the present. That’s because thoughts are always about the past or the future. When you live in the present, you remain lightweight in the head and the heart. And, isn’t that what ‘enlightened’ people do—live in the present? The only difference between them and the rest of us is the flab of unnecessary thoughts. If only we shed those ‘kilos’, we too could become enlightened.
