Q: I keep getting a catch in various parts of my body, mainly the calves and upper back. It lasts for a few seconds and is extremely painful. People tell me that it’s a symptom of weakness. Is it true? What can I do for it?

A: Such catches indicate weak or irritated muscles. It can happen because of various reasons such as nutritional deficiencies, wrong posture while working or even excessive workouts. In case of acute pain, you can apply ice and take rest. For diagnosis, the first step would be to get blood tests such as a haemogram, serum uric acid, vitamin B12, vitamin D and serum electrolytes done. If any abnormalities show up in the tests, they need to be corrected. It’s better that you consult a dietician and a physician rather than self-medicate.
