Q: My body is pear shaped with heavy bottom and calves. I feel embarrassed when I try to get into tight jeans or short tops. I am 5ft 3 inches tall and weigh 65kg. I feel I have a funny body. My face is lean and when I lose weight it shows on the face, which makes it look ugly. I have fat upper arms and thin wrists. What should I do to get the figure of my dreams?
A: There is nothing to feel embarrassed about your body. A lot of people experience the same problem. Your body has a tendency to store fat around the hips and as with most people with pear-shaped bodies, the fat around the hips is the last to be mobilised during weight loss, that’s all. Avoid going on a crash diet; it will only cause you to lose lean muscle and make the hips look obviously wider. I suggest you get up to five hours of cardiovascular exercise per week in the form of brisk walking, stepping, cycling or swimming to help oxidise [burn] fat. Incorporate squats and lunges in your workout routine—up to two sets of 20 reps to tone the muscles of the hips and thighs. The size of your calf muscles will reduce as your weight decreases.
