Q: I am a 26-year-old married woman suffering from a serious weight problem. I have a BMI of 33 and come under the obese category. I am fed up of trying from years to reduce weight because I don’t want to expose myself to dangerous diseases that are caused by obesity. I need your help to get out of this trouble.

A: Since you have made prior attempts to reduce weight and haven’t succeeded, I suggest you first need to rule out a medical condition that may be causing you to gain weight or that may be preventing weight loss. Once a cause is ruled out, following a balanced diet and a regular exercise regime will initiate weight loss. Be cautious, however, of going overboard in your attempts to lose weight. Extreme measures like a crash diet will only lead to loss of lean muscle and fluid besides causing nutritional deficiencies. Choose an exercise form that you enjoy and are more likely to sustain for long.
