Q: I am a slim man. My only problem is that I have a slight pot belly. Is there anything that I can do to get rid of it? It makes me look bad.

A: The pot belly is nothing but a layer of fat under the skin and also possibly visceral fat [fat surrounding the internal organs]. While crunches will help you tone the abdominal muscles, it may not help you get rid of the pot belly. Remember, there is no such thing as ‘spot reduction’. You will need to work at both, losing fat as well as building lean muscle. I recommend up to three hours of cardiovascular exercise per week alternating with three sessions of weight training. This will help you convert the stored fat into energy and build lean muscle, which will give you a well-toned body. As a result, you’ll certainly look and feel good.
