Diagnosis dilemma

I have symptoms of hyperthyroidism but clinical reports show it to be hypothyroidism.

Q:  I have symptoms of hyperthyroidism but clinical reports show it to be hypothyroidism. My doctor has prescribed thyronorm 50mg daily. Now, I do not know whether it is right for me.

A: Disparity between symptoms and blood reports in case of thyroid test is uncommon. At times, thyroiditis [inflammation of thyroid that causes symptoms like hyperthyroidism] precedes hypothyroid blood picture. During the initial phase, you may have symptoms of hyperthyroidism and during the recovery phase, the blood picture looks like hypothyroidism. Many a times, thyroiditis recovers completely with time and needs no intervention. However, I suggest that you consult an endocrinologist to solve the confusion.
