Flush cures

Detox is an age-old practice for good health, feeling light and energetic

FruitsWe are exposed to many toxic elements in the air, including pollutants, on a day-to-day basis.

Our body is geared by nature to attend to the natural process of eliminating or neutralising toxins through the colon, liver, kidneys, lungs, lymphatic system, and skin. But, constant exposure to pollutants is something we cannot avoid – it is inevitable.

This is reason enough why we need to follow a detox programme.

Fasting, therapists opine, is one of the most ancient, easiest, low-cost and effective methods of detoxification. However, you should remember that the objective of fasting, with a prescribed dietary regimen, is to achieve a healthier way of eating. It is not related to just weight loss, or elimination of toxins from the body.

Yet, fasts are not as simple as they sound. Long-term fasts can cause nutritive deficiency and other problems as well. It is, therefore, ideal to perform them under professional guidance, which will help to assess your levels of nutrients. This also ensures that a deficiency, or shortfall, does not happen.

Water and juice fast

Detox therapists recommend, especially for those who are new to fasting, a fast every weekend for few months. You would do well to break your fast with a day of raw foods, primarily fruits or salads, with water. No heavy meal/s, please! Also, remember to take at least six – not more – glasses of water during the fast.

Juice Fast

7:00 AM Lemon [with honey/salt] water
9:00 AM Grape/orange juice, preferably fresh
11:00 AM Carrot/apple juice
1:00 PM Grapefruit/cucumber juice
3:00 PM Carrot/apple juice; celery is also good
5:00 PM Spinach juice
7:00 PM Heated [not boiled] carrot/tomato/celery, or onion
9:00 PM Hot/warm herbal tea.

Soup or salad.

NB: Speak to your therapist about your “ideal” detox dietary intake/quantity.

Alkaline-detoxification diet

This diet comprises of a three-to four-week specific eating plan. In this, you need to totally avoid acid-forming foods from your diet. Instead, consume only fruits and vegetables; fresh sprouts and millet. You need to chew slowly and very well, not as quickly as you are normally accustomed to!

Therapists often advice you to drink quality water, or better still steamed vegetable water, during the plan. Remember – you need to eat your alkaline-detox food before sunset.

This plan detoxifies the body tissues of protein and acid wastes and has a curative effect. It helps you to lose weight and makes you feel more energetic and positive.

Vitamin C

It is a known fact that constant exposure to toxins drains your vitamin C reserves in the body.

Research also suggests that vitamin C deficiency harms the body’s natural process of detoxification. Therapists often recommend a good intake of vitamin C through natural food sources, during a detox plan. Alternatively, they may also prescribe a nutritive pill that takes care of your vitamin C requirement – and, also promote detox.
