5 Natural Remedies for Your Headache

woman having a headacheA headache can become a throbbing problem that renders you unable to think, much less function like a normal person. It seems that today, in a world that is constantly in a rush and where people are constantly stressed, those headaches come on more often and are much harder to get rid of.

Luckily, there are quite a few natural remedies out there that are said to work well when it comes to getting rid of everything from migraines to tension headaches. Below you can find a few of those natural remedies that will hopefully take your problem away.

1. Eat Some Chocolate

The debate as to whether eating a chocolate bar causes headaches or cures them continues to rage, but there is proof that the right type of chocolate can indeed help you. That doesn’t mean that you can overload on candy and expect the headache to go away. You also might want to consult your doctor first, if you aren’t positive chocolate will help.

However, studies have shown that different types of chocolate work for different types of headaches, so determining what type of headache you’re suffering from before you chow down is key.

2. Essential Oils

There are quite a few essential oils on the market today that help with headaches as well. Some of the most successful are lavender oil, rosemary, and peppermint. You can use them by simply rubbing a little on your temples when the headache begins or even pouring a drop into a warm bath and then sitting back to try to relax with your eyes closed for a bit. You can also boil some water, add a few drops of the oil and then breathe in the vapors for a few seconds. Essential oils have been used in other places as pain relief for centuries, but you still want to make sure there is nothing you are allergic to in the oil you choose before you try it.

3. Find a Dark Quiet Place to Relax In

One of the most effective natural remedies, especially for tension headaches, is to go lie down in a dark, quiet room–one that is cool and silent. If you can turn off the lights, draw the blinds, and lay down for at least 30 minutes, your headache should start to ease and eventually go away, leaving you refreshed and ready to tackle the rest of your day.

4. Eat Some Watermelon

One of the main causes of headaches is dehydration. If you suffer from headaches often, you need to purchase some water-rich foods. One of the best is watermelon, so keep some on hand for when headaches threaten. Watermelon is not only a delicious way to hydrate, but it is also full of healthy sugars, which will help prevent those headaches that seem to hit hard in the humid, summer months.

5. Meditation

While many people don’t believe that meditation can help with headaches, studies show that it does. Meditation helps you to relax and de-stress. Stress, of course, is the cause of many headaches as well. Try meditation just to see how it works for you. You have nothing to lose and a headache-free day to gain if it works.

Headaches are awful conditions to experience and can limit your ability to do everyday tasks. If the natural remedies above don’t help with your headaches, then you need to see your doctor as soon as possible for diagnosis and to see if there is an underlying cause to your problem. These remedies should work well to alleviate almost any type of headache you are prone to getting.
