Spirulina is microscopic blue-green algae whose cells form the shape of a perfect spiral coil. Hence, the name spirulina, which means, little spiral. Spirulina grows naturally in warm and highly alkaline lakes in subtropical areas.
Spirulina provides high concentrations of many nutrients – amino acids, chelated minerals, pigmentations, rhamnose sugars [complex natural plant sugars], trace elements, and enzymes.
In addition, spirulina is one of the few plant sources of vitamin B-12, usually found only in animal tissues. So, how nutritious is spirulina? The algae is a highly digestible food, containing 60-70 per cent of protein, and it provides all the essential amino acids, a rarity among plant foods.

Those with sensitive digestive systems should drink sufficient water so that spirulina does not create stomach upset, or blockages. One tablespoon of spirulina a day can eliminate iron-deficiency anaemia, the most common mineral deficiency.
Spirulina is important for malnourished people whose intestines can no longer absorb nutrients effectively. Clinical studies have shown that it helps rebuild healthy intestinal flora.
